The Basics
Who can sign up for Happy Scraps Composting services?
Anyone in the Asheville municipal area is eligible to sign up for Happy Scraps Composting services. That includes individuals, couples, single family households, businesses, event hosts, and (in some cases) even farms!
Can I share a bin with a neighbor or a friend?
Absolutely! If you and a neighbor want to split a bin, that’s totally fine with me. Just make sure one of you is responsible for putting it out on pickup day. If you ever need an extra bin or a larger setup, let me know and we’ll make it work!
How can I sign up for compost pickup service?
Signing up for our compost pickup service is easy. Simply click this link, choose your plan, then someone will deliver a bin to your doorstep for you to start filling!
What can I compost?
Rule of thumb, if it is or was a plant you can compost it. If it came from an animal, you can probably compost it. If it came from a factory, it probably can’t be composted unless labeled as such.
At this time, we are not accepting meat, bones or animal scraps, but egg shells are 100% acceptable and encouraged.
For more specifics on what compostable materials Happy Scraps will accept, view our handy-dandy composting guide!
Not sure if an item you have is acceptable for composting with Happy Scraps? shoot me a call or text and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. (828) 484-6944
Can I compost meat products and animal bones?
While these items will compost, we are not accepting these items at this time so I can ensure that we are compliant with local, state, and federal laws.
In a near future, I want to make this an available option, so hang tight while I make it happen!
In the meantime, check out our guide on what can and can’t be composted with Happy Scraps for an up-to-date list of what can and can’t be composted.
How does the compost pickup service work?
Our compost pickup service is simple and convenient. We provide a designated bin for you to fill with organic waste. On your designated pickup day, you leave your bin out, we pick it up, and leave you with a clean bin to fill up again!
Depending on your preference, you can get your compost back as nutrient dense soil, or you can donate it to local businesses like farms, reducing the need for artificial fertilizer. Pretty cool, huh?
What time do you pick up compost?
As a very new business, I’m still finding our grooviest schedule that makes pickup easiest for everyone.
At this time, pickups happen on Tuesday afternoon/evenings. Depending on the plan you choose, pickups will happen every one or two weeks.
For everyone’s convenience, I’d recommend leaving your compost bin out in the morning on your pickup day and I will pick it up sometime after noon and before midnight.
What happens to my compost after you pick it up?
Your food scraps go on a little adventure to become rich, healthy compost! I process it locally, reducing the emissions made by transporting it to some far away compost facility. Over the next 3-6 months, your kitchen scraps and other compostables get turned into nutrient-packed soil.
Depending on your preference, you can get your compost back as nutrient dense soil, or you can allow us to donate it to a local farm to reduce their reliance on artificial fertilizers. Pretty cool, huh?
Can I get my compost back to use in my garden?
Yes! You absolutely can opt to get your compost back as super nutrient dense fertilizer you can use in your garden.
At this time, since we are just starting out, the timeline to getting your compost back is difficult to determine. It will depend on the health and liveliness of the compost that is being processed as well as the weather, but you will be informed when you can start receiving your compost back.
The compost you can receive back won’t be a pound for pound match, I can say that the more you contribute, the more you’ll get!
Does Happy Dirt compost for businesses, events, weddings, or farms?
Yes! These services are quoted individually, so contact us to tell you about your compost needs and we’ll return a quote to you as soon as possible.
About the business
How can Happy Scraps offer such a low price?
At this time, Happy Scraps is a one-man-show, meaning labor costs that are a part of other composting services expenses is not a factor impacting the cost of Happy Dirt’s services.
Also, unlike other compost services, while other compost services drive their compostables across state lines to big composting facilities – increasing emissions and fuel costs – we process our locally. Meaning reduced environmental impact and reduced prices for Happy Scraps’ services.
How big is this company?
It’s just me! I’m Ryan, a local of West Asheville. Sometimes my fiancé helps me, she says I should pay her more (she gets paid ‘the volunteer rate,’ meaning she gets compensated in affection and favors) but I don’t think she’s going to jump ship anytime soon.
There is potential that this business grows and that I’ll need more hands for compost pickups, but for now it’s just me.
How long has this business been in operation?
This business launched in March 2025. As a very young business, I appreciate your patience as it learns to walk. If there is anything I can do better to serve you, the community, or the environment as a whole I would love to hear from you. Please use our contact page or text me at (828) 484-6944.

Who will pick up my compost?
That will be me! I’m Ryan. I’ll be coming by in either a teal Subaru Forester or red Chevy Cobalt.
In the off-chance that I am away and unable to do a pickup, another person will come by to receive your compost in their own personal vehicle. You will be informed of this change beforehand so you are not caught unaware by a stranger picking up your bins.
In a near future, I’m hoping to have a sprinter van or truck as soon as I’m able to finance it. If you know anyone who’s selling a good sprinter van at a reasonable price I’d be happy to know about it!
I’m a friendly kind of person and I love meeting people like you in the community. If you spot me grabbing your compost, feel free to say hi! I’d love to meet you.
What if I forget to put out my compost bin on pickup day?
100%, don’t worry about it, life happens. Maybe you slept in, maybe the dog distracted you, or maybe you just had a lot on your plate (and not the compostable kind). No stress.
We’re not some big inaccessible corporation, I’m just a guy trying to be helpful. Just shoot me a quick message we’ll work something out.
Best case scenario, I can pick it up from you personally same-day. At worst, it could mean you’ve got to hang on to your filled pail for another week.
Either way, don’t worry – but maybe consider setting an alarm so it’s easier to remember. 😉

What happens if I am going on vacation?
Great question. If you are going on vacation, please let me know either by our Contact page or by text at least 2 weeks in advance. My phone is (828) 484-6944.
Before you leave for vacation, I will either pick up your bin the day before your departure or you will leave your bin out somewhere safe and I will pick it up on the next Tuesday.
I’m having an urgent issue. What do I do?
I’m sorry that you are having an issue! Please, start by texting my phone at (828) 484-6944. Then email me through the Contact page to tell me more about your problem. I’ll get in touch with you and we’ll work it out.
